The Mapbox Workers Union
Oral History
This episode is a casual chat about Starbucks Workers United with the author of We Are the Union and Red State Revolt. We dive into the worker-to-worker approach that built such a high degree of solidarity.
This episode dives into Grim Kim's take on the historic Starbucks Workers United drive. Author of the book Fight Like Hell, Kim is also a labor reporter for In These Times magazine, a columnist for Teen Vogue since 2018, and video correspondent for More Perfect Union.
This episode is a sprawling discussion with the author of The Hammer. Hamilton is also a labor writer for In These Times. He has spent the past decade writing about labor and politics for Gawker, Splinter, The Guardian, and elsewhere. More of his work is on Substack: How Things Work.
This oral history features Jaz, one of the original salts who kicked off the Starbucks Workers United drive in Buffalo, NY. They later authored a wonderful book called Get On The Job And Organize. Stories from this memoir are included in the oral history.
In this episode, John walks us through the history of organizing at Starbucks, starting long before the union we see today. His team over at WCH is capturing some of the most important stories from the labor movement.
In this episode Jenny, a Labor Notes staff writer, dives into why this campaign was so impactful for the spirit of the labor movement in the US. She touches on how this shop, even though it's not an obvious target, turned out to be a strategic jackpot.
Strike Kitchen is a home for my creative projects that center the labor movement. It's been the honor of my life to build these stories with my friends, comrades, and fellow organizers. Here are some of the other things I'm up to at the moment:
Every year I organize a gathering for all workers, organizers, and activists in the tech industry to come together and learn, build community, strategize, and recognize our collective power.
I wrote a history of the tech labor movement with one of my best friends and most trusted co-organizers, JS Tan. In this book, we trace the origins of collective action in tech, how worker resistance helped radicalize the billionaire class, and how we think rank and file organizing must shift to meet the moment. Coming soon!
Over the past few years, I've been collecting recordings from union-busting meetings. From grueling captive audience sessions to leaked management trainings to disciplinary meetings, I hope to publish this trove of inoculation materials so workers can prepare for what's coming. If you have a recording of union busters, contact me and I'll see if we can safely add it to the archive.
